Today is the 85th anniversary of the demise of Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, the leader of the country’s War of Independence and founder of the Republic of Turkey.
As is customary, daily life will stop at 9.05 a.m. local time (0605GMT), sirens will sound to mark the exact moment of Ataturk’s death at the age of 57 and millions of people across the country will observe two minutes of silence.
It is very emotional to see the traffic stop and people get out of their cars to observe the two minute silence.
This morning I went to the Ataturk statue and watched from there. I will post videos later
