The people of Turkey are no strangers to a national holiday and proud display of the Turkish flag, and this holiday is no different.
The Commemoration of Ataturk, Youth and Sports Day is an annual Turkish national holiday celebrated on May 19 to commemorate Mustafa Kemal’s landing at Samsun on May 19, 1919, which is regarded as the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence in the official historiography.
Youths sing the national anthem, recite poems, partake in parades and sports and realise cultural activities like performing folk dances.
Here in Kusadasi the youth will be taking part in events at their schools and at the Ataturk statue down on the seafront.
Remember, this is a public holiday and and if you are out and about on the roads, please take care and allow for more time for your travel.
