Today, 12.12.12, has been a highly anticipated date by millions around the world and has been chosen by dozens of couples in Turkey as the date for their wedding and by many men to make wedding proposals.
The combination of the date 12.12.12 added to the time 12:12 has been seen by many couples as a unique chance have particularly memorable day. Getting married or delivering a baby on special dates such as 12.12.12 has become a trend in the last few years. People who believe in the good fortune that the same numbers bring have applied to marriage offices months in advance to have their wedding on this date. This is the last time that the same numbers in dates such as 11.11.2011 or 12.12.2012 will coincide this century.
Officials have stated that Dec. 12 will be a date for marriage boom. It is also been reported that marriage applications have increased fourfold compared to the number of applications made for the date 11.11.2011 and officials were only able to accept half of the applications made. Normally, marriage offices marry an average of 13-14 couples a day, yet this number could increase as many as 50 today. One of Fatih Municipality’s marriage registrars, Gülcan Tufan, said that her office was only able to accept 35 out of 50 marriage applications made by couples for Dec. 12.
The Bağcılar Municipality is expected to hold 131 marriage ceremonies on Dec. 12, becoming the municipality that will officiate the maximum number of marriages in İstanbul.
Bolu Deputy Mayor Emine Davarcıoğlu also noted that 20 couples who believe in good luck applied to the marriage office this year to tie the knot on Dec. 12.
Ayhan Varlı, who believes in the good luck of special dates, said that his brother got married on 08.08.08 and he and his fiancée have also applied to get married on the last “special date” of this century.
“Couples who applied to marry on Wednesday are really lucky. There are couples who have asked for 12:12 as the time to sign their marriage licenses as well. People have chosen this date for their wedding because a similar date won’t be available for another century,” said Davarcıoğlu, encouraging more people to take advantage of the date.
Wedding planning companies also confirmed that they have received many requests from men who wish to propose to their partners on Dec. 12, stating that they found it hard to meet all the requests.
Yasemin Baş from Sürpriz Perisi, a wedding planning company, noted that they have advised their customers to use the Çırağan Palace or the Maiden Tower as the venue for their proposal as all their yachts used for such occasions are fully booked.
However, there has been a decline in the number of pregnant women who have chosen to have a C-section on this day. One of the nurses at Sema Hospital in İstanbul, Hülya Özlü, said, “No pregnant women have asked for a C-section on this date except the ones who have to have a C-section delivery due to exceptional problems.”
“Last year some of my patients asked for a C-section delivery on 11.11.11, yet I have received no such requests this year,” noted Gynecologist Yeşim İşlegen from İstanbul’s 29 Mayıs Hospital.
