Released by the Hrant Dink Foundation, KarDes is a new walking tour app which will allow the user to discover Istanbul’s many cultural sites.
The app is designed as a personal tour guide, with each tour lasting around two hours.
Narod Avci is the project coordinator along with Rudi Sayat Pulatyan as the research coordinator, and Atom Saskal, the project editor. Together they have worked for over a year and the free app has already been downloaded by over 7,000 people since it went live on January 9th.
At present the app has twelve walking tours which includes local mosques, schools, cemeteries and synagogues.
Avci stated that they “aimed to show Istanbul’s multicultural structure, so sometimes a hamam [Turkish bath] or a sports complex or even a stone may be included in the app.
Prominent poets and artists homes are highlighted and the app also includes forty oral history videos where locals relate the history of their neighbourhood.
