FCDO Warns UK Travellers to Turkey Over Paragliding Dangers and Alcohol Safety Risks

The UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has issued updated travel advice for Turkey, urging British tourists to exercise greater caution amid a rise in serious and fatal incidents linked to paragliding and unsafe alcohol consumption.

Paragliding Incidents Prompt Renewed Warnings

Turkey remains one of the world’s most popular destinations for paragliding, with hotspots such as Ölüdeniz drawing thousands of British holidaymakers each year. But the FCDO says the sport carries “significant risks,” noting that several UK nationals have suffered life‑changing injuries and, in some cases, lost their lives.

Officials are advising travellers to fly only with licensed, reputable operators and to ensure they receive proper safety briefings before taking off. Particular attention is being drawn to landing zones, which in some resorts are located in busy public areas. Tourists are urged to keep clear of these zones to avoid collisions and unexpected landings.

Alcohol Safety: Avoid Unregulated Products

Alongside the paragliding warning, the FCDO has updated its guidance on alcohol consumption in Turkey. Travellers are advised to buy drinks only from licensed shops, bars, and hotels, and to avoid homemade or unlabelled alcohol, which has been linked to cases of methanol poisoning in recent years.

The advisory also cautions visitors to check bottles for broken seals or poor‑quality labels—both potential signs of counterfeit products. Anyone who becomes unwell after drinking alcohol is urged to seek medical attention immediately.

Part of Wider Global Travel Guidance

The FCDO regularly updates travel advice for more than 200 destinations, covering issues ranging from health risks and natural disasters to local laws and adventure activities. The latest Turkey update reflects ongoing concerns about tourist safety as the country continues to attract millions of UK visitors annually.

Why Turkey Remains a UK Favourite

Despite the warnings, Turkey’s popularity shows no sign of slowing. Its combination of luxury resorts, dramatic coastlines, and adventure sports continues to appeal to British travellers seeking both relaxation and adrenaline‑fuelled experiences.

Officials stress that the country remains a safe and rewarding destination when visitors follow local regulations and basic safety precautions.

Travellers Urged to Stay Informed

The FCDO recommends that holidaymakers check the latest travel updates before departure and throughout their stay. Monitoring official guidance, it says, is one of the simplest ways to reduce risk and ensure a trouble‑free trip.
