Erzurum province is one of the coldest provinces in Turkey and despite temperatures dropping to below 30 degrees Celsius, a lake in the Sogutlu neighborhood does not freeze.
The lake does not fall below 18 degrees and according to local folklore there are many stories surrounding the lake.
One legend says that Russian soldiers died after eating fish from the lake during the Ottoman-Russo wars and reports say that no one in the region suffers from rheumatism as the lakes water is helpful for easing rheumatism.
Fishing is not allowed at the lake and any fish which die are buried in special cemeteries
Local headman, Seyfettin Kucukler said that researchers have not been able to discover the reasons for the lakes mysteries or where the source of its water comes from.
