A new plant species native to western Turkey has been found in Denizli’s Cameli district.
The plant which was discovered after Rasim Cetiner, a forestry engineer, sent a photo of the species to Ege University.
The rindera genus has 25 species which have been documented all over the world and five of them have been seen in Turkey.
Hasan Yildirim from Ege Universtiy said that three of the five species are endemic to Turkey and this latest find is also native to this area in Denizli.
Studies have shown that certain chemical compounds from this type of plant have major lethal effects on cancer cell lines. It is hoped that this new species will contain the same chemicals.
