If you were lucky enough to have been visiting Kusadasi in April, you could not have failed to miss the first stage of the “Presidential Tour of Turkey”.

The first stage of the race started in Bodrum with a total of 167 racers from 25 teams of what is the world’s only intercontinental cycling competition.

The racers covered 207 kilometres (129 miles) from the Aegean town of Bodrum in Muğla province to the beach resort town of Kuşadası in neighboring Aydın province.

There were a few accidents during the first stage, including a serious crash for Spanish team Equipo Kern Pharma’s Danny van der Tuuk, who had to be rushed to the hospital.

It was Lotto Soudal’s Australian rider Caleb Ewan who won the first stage, finishing in 4 hours and 38 minutes.

Due to bad weather several crashes and with the approval of the Tour of Turkey administration, the Istanbul stage of the race was cancelled.

New Zealand’s Patrick Bevin from the Israel-Premier Tech team was declared the winner of the 57th Tour of Turkey after winning Stage 7 in the north-western province of Tekirdağ.
