The General Directorate of Meteorology has forecast that temperatures will be very high this summer, which is expected to be the hottest summer in the last 50 years.
Professor Mikdat Kadıoğlu from İstanbul Technical University’s faculty of aeronautics and astronautics stated that temperatures, particularly in the western parts of the country, will reach unseasonable highs. “Temperatures will be above seasonal norms for 62 days of the summer season, which lasts 92 days,” Kadıoğlu said. “Ozone layer depletion and humidity may also increase temperatures, which can trigger cardiac and respiratory tract illnesses,” Kadıoğlu added.
Dr. Tevfik Fikret İlgenli told reporters that people who have cardiac diseases should pay greater attention to their nutrition when temperatures are high. “One should soft foods a lot and eat more fruits and vegetables than fatty foods,” İlgenli said, also warning people against strenuous exercise in hot weather, which can cause heat stroke and loss of consciousness.
The meteorology directorate’s forecast for this week includes an increase in temperatures by 4-8 degrees Celsius throughout the country. Director Ahmet Uçar added that these high temperatures will decrease countrywide for the weekend and the eastern and Black Sea provinces can expect rain.
