By diving 71 meters, Derya Can, Turkish national swimmer, has broken the world record in the category of deep sea diving without flippers.

Can, who will dive on three successive days in three different categories to break the world skin diving record, broke her first world record on the third day of the Feast of the Sacrifice (Eid al-Adha). Can made a gift of her record to the 90th anniversary of the foundation of the Turkish Republic.The national swimmer, who realized her record attempt in Antalya’s Hidayet bay in spite of unfavorable weather conditions, was accompanied by coastguard teams and a Ministry of Health first aid and rescue team.

 

Middle East Technical University’s Undersport group (ODTÜ SAS) attended the record attempt with 21 members, and referees Igor Orel and Nicalaus A. Soza Garcia from the Confédération Mondiale des Activités Subaquatiques (CMAS) and Levent Ucuzal, CMAS free-diving technical council chair, were also witnesses to Can’s record. The former holder of the world title with 61 meters in this category, Şahika Ercümen, is also from ODTÜ SAS. In the record-breaking dive, Can stayed underwater for 1.56 minutes. Source Hürriyet
