Turkish Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan is set to visit the United Kingdom on July 26 to meet with British Prime Minister David Cameron and to attend the inauguration ceremony for the 2012 London Olympic Games as Cameron’s guest.

After the inauguration ceremony on July 27, the two premiers are scheduled to watch the basketball game between

Turkey and Angola’s national women’s teams.

The London Olympics mark various firsts for Turkey. The country will be represented in several sports from which it has been absent in previous editions of the world’s premier sporting event, including badminton and gymnastics. Turkish athletes will compete in a total of 16 disciplines, also a first.

Another major breakthrough for the nation is that women now outnumber men on the Olympic team. This is mostly due to the national volleyball and basketball teams, which both won the right to participate in the Games.
