Izmir is Turkey’s third largest city. It was formerly known as Smyrna and has the reputation as the centre of cosmopolitan lifestyle. Here you will find many cafes, bars, shopping malls and the famous Kemeraltı çarşıcı (bazaar). The centre is called Konak where there are delightful old buildings portraying the bygone eras of Izmir. You can take a day trip to Izmir from Kusadasithe coach usually leaves every hour and there is a free transfer from the coach station into the city centre.
The ancient city of Ephesus must be one of the most famous touristic sites in Turkey. The landmark buildings to explore include the grand theatre, Roman terrace houses, public latrines and the Celsisus library that held the third largest collection of scrolls in the ancient world.
Not far from Ephesus is the town of Selcuk where there is a museum which hold artefacts from Ephesus. Nearby is the famous house of the Virgin Mary where it is said to be the place of her assumption. You can also visit Saint John’s Basilica, supposedly where his tomb is and the nearby ancient Isa Bey mosque with its impressive Seljuk architecture.
Known all over Turkey for its famous wines is the beautiful village of Sirince. Enjoying strolling through the village, sample the wines and do a bit of souvenir shopping as well.
Miletus, Priene and the Apollo Temple are known as the famous trio. You can explore these two ancient cities and the pagan worshipping temple in one day The temple Athena is the most prominent landmark here, however, do not miss the smaller theatre with its majestic seating for VIPs.
