Turkish cat awarded alimony payment in divorce case

A family court in Istanbul has approved a divorce settlement that includes financial support and care arrangements for the couple’s pets — a decision that underscores the growing role of animal welfare in family law.

The case centers on Bugra B., who filed for divorce from his wife Ezgi B. after two years of marriage, citing severe incompatibility. As part of the settlement, Bugra B. agreed to pay ₺550,000 (approximately $13,104) in financial compensation to Ezgi B.

While pet-related provisions have appeared in previous divorce cases, this agreement stands out for its structured, long-term financial support for the couple’s animals. Legal experts suggest it could serve as a precedent for future settlements involving pet custody and care.

The court is expected to formally review the case in the coming days.
