Three Turkish universities, Boğaziçi University, Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) and Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ)
Ranked in the top ten of the first-ever list of the best universities in the BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2014 released by the Times Higher Education magazine.
The U.K.’s authoritative magazine Times Higher Education published the world’s first ranking for universities in BRICS and emerging economies on Wednesday, which included three of Turkey’s leading universities. While Boğaziçi University, İstanbul Technical University (İTÜ) and Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) ranked in the top 10 of the BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2014, a total seven Turkish universities made the top 100 list.
The BRICS & Emerging Economies Rankings 2014 is the world’s first ranking for universities in Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, plus 17 other emerging economies. While the top two spots went to China’s Peking and Tsinghua universities, Boğaziçi University was ranked fifth. Istanbul Technical University (İTÜ) made the list in seventh place while Ankara’s Middle East Technical University (ODTÜ) was selected as the ninth top university amongst emerging economies. As for the Turkish universities listed in the top 100, Bilkent University came in 12th, Koç University ranked 20th, Istanbul University was 73rd and Hacettepe University listed 80th.
Phil Baty, editor of the Times Higher Education Rankings stated, “Turkey is one of the strongest performers. With five universities in the top 20, it is the second strongest nation after China. The diversity and competition of the sector contributes significantly. This is a feature acquired from the United States. Economists place high importance on Turkey’s young population and economic potential. Universities will play a great role in Turkey achieving its goals.”
Nearly 10,000 academics worldwide contributed to the preparation of the list, which used 13 carefully calibrated performance indicators to determine the performance of universities’ core missions of teaching, research, knowledge transfer and international outlook.
