All minimum wage earners and millions of workers and their families in Turkey, will now eagerly await the outcome of commission talks this week, the first of which are being held late afternoon today, 10th December 2024.

The process of determining the 2025 minimum wage, which directly concerns nearly 7 million employees and indirectly the whole of society, will begin with a meeting to be held today at 16:00, hosted by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security.

In the Minimum Wage Determination Commission, which consists of 15 people, five representatives each from workers, employers and the government, workers will be represented by TÜRK-İŞ and employers by the Turkish Confederation of Employer Associations (TİSK).

Current minimum wage

The minimum wage for a worker is currently 20,020 liras 50 cents gross per month, and 17,020 liras 12 cents net after deductions.

The total cost of the minimum wage to the employer is 23,502 lira 94 cents for a worker. 20,02 lira 50 cents of this is the gross minimum wage, 3,100 lira 39 cents is the social security premium, and 400 lira 5 cents is the employer unemployment insurance fund.

The minimum wage figure affects many items, including unemployment benefits, severance pay, GSS premiums, military service and birth debt, optional insurance premiums, internship fees, and minimum wage workers’ report fees.

How is the minimum wage determined?

The minimum wage is determined by the Minimum Wage Determination Commission, which consists of 15 people, five representatives from each employee, employer and government, as required by law. The commission is called to a meeting by the Minister of Labor and Social Security and meets four times in December as part of the work to determine the new minimum wage.

The commission, chaired by one of the members determined by the Ministry of Labor and Social Security, meets with the participation of at least 10 members and makes decisions by majority vote. In the event of a tie, the side chaired by the Commission is deemed to have the majority.
